Tree Trimming and Pruning Tips

You should pay careful attention to the trees that are around your home. Dead branches and some smaller limbs can pose a danger to you, your family, and your house. Your trees must be properly cared for.

Proper tree pruning is very important for a healthy and beautiful tree. Pruning is needed when first planting a tree. Pruning young trees will control the growth and to help develop its shape. Tree pruning can help promote growth in foliage, flowers and fruit. It is also used to remove diseased and damaged areas. Late winter and early spring is a good time to prune because it's much easier to see the shape of the tree and the branches without the leaves.
Tree Trimming and Pruning

Removing Dead or Diseased Branches
Look around your home for dead and diseased branches. Dead branches are often dark and brittle. branches that are diseased are usually discolored. These branches should be removed to prevent the disease from spreading and to make room for new growth.

Trimming Crossing Branches

Tree branches should not rest on each another. The top branch does not add much weight. But as that branch grows, the bottom branch will end up supporting a lot weight. The top branch should be trimmed away because if the branch breaks, it could cause damage to the tree and anything below.

Split Branches
Split branches are at a risk of splitting the tree trunk or important limbs. As the branches grow larger and heavier their meeting point can become more likely to break. Heavy winds can cause the trunk to split starting at branches like these.

Cutting the branch

Cutting branches is a way to prevent tearing. An easy way is to make a partial cut on the underside. Then finish from above. Complete this by removing the stub up to the base. This will encourage healing.
How To Prune Trees

• All pruning cuts on branches should be as close to the trunk possible. Also the bark at the edge of all pruning cuts should remain firmly attached.

• Any branch that is too big to support with one hand should be cut in stages to avoid splitting or tearing of the bark. Ropes should be used to lower large branches to the ground.

When to Prune
Trees
• Different types of trees should be pruned at different times of the year.
• Trim ornamental trees before they bloom and especially those that flower before June.
• Summer blooming trees should be pruned in early spring before they start their new growth.
• Fruit trees should be pruned in late winter for shape and to open the middle of the tree to sunlight.
• Young fruit trees should be pruned later than older fruit trees.

Safety First!
There are some basic rules to follow when trimming trees.
• Never trim trees from a ladder. Secure yourself to the tree from at least two points.
• Never climb with cutting tools in your hand. Have someone raise them to you.
• Wear a hard hat and safety glasses to avoid injury.
• ALWAYS REMEMBER, leave the difficult and hard to reach branches to professionals.
