How To Prune Trees
• All pruning cuts on branches should be as close to the trunk possible. Also the bark at the edge of all pruning cuts should remain firmly attached.
•
Any branch that is too big to support with one hand should be cut in stages to avoid splitting or tearing of the bark. Ropes should be used to lower large branches to the ground.
When to Prune Trees
• Different types of trees should be pruned at different times of the year.
•
Trim ornamental trees before they bloom and especially those that flower before June.
•
Summer blooming trees should be pruned in early spring before they start their new growth.
•
Fruit trees should be pruned in late winter for shape and to open the middle of the tree to sunlight.
• Young fruit trees should be pruned later than older fruit trees.
Safety First!
There are some basic rules to follow when trimming trees.
• Never trim trees from a ladder. Secure yourself to the tree from at least two points.
• Never climb with cutting tools in your hand. Have someone raise them to you.
• Wear a hard hat and safety glasses to avoid injury.
• ALWAYS REMEMBER, leave the difficult and hard to reach branches to professionals.
